I Never Know When to Use A/An or The!
Misusing articles can confuse native speakers of English, since they may be unsure if you are referring to something specific, or not. This difference in meaning is found in the correct use of articles, a/an and the (and more!).
In this short module, you’ll learn the correct meaning and usage of articles (a/an, the and others), and how and when to use them. Also, using or not using articles correctly is one of the top ways that you sound foreign, so getting this right helps you sound more natural in your English.
How to Change the Meaning With Only One Punctuation Mark (and other problems with commas)
Can you really change the meaning of a sentence with just one comma? The answer is yes! You want to be clearly understood, not like the uneducated people who pepper social media with their rants. You don’t want to give people the wrong idea when writing, so using commas correctly is imperative.
Additionally, proper formatting of information shows you care about the details, which inspires confidence in your readers. If you care about the little things (like commas), it shows you are trustworthy, because you’ll definitely care about the big things!
Why Don’t People Know Which One I Mean?
Misusing determiners can confuse native speakers of English, since they may be unsure if you are referring to something specific, or not. This difference in meaning is found in the correct use of determiners. In this short module, you’ll learn the correct meaning and usage of determiners, and how and when to use them.
Also, using or not using determiners correctly is one of the top ways that you sound foreign, so getting this right helps you sound more natural in your English.
How to Avoid Sounding Uneducated, Fast!
As a college professor, when any speakers of English use irregular verbs wrong, warning bells go off in my head wondering why the speakers (or writers) haven’t taken the time to learn these right. Yes, there are over 100 of them, but we use them all the time. It’s inexcusable to get them wrong, especially in writing, when you have all the time you need to look them up. I immediately wonder, “What other fundamental parts of their education have they neglected to learn?”
To help you solve this issue, I’ve researched the most common irregular verbs (according to the Corpus of Contemporary American English) that you need to know, and broken them down into categories to make them easy to memorize. In addition, I’ve included a review of the two major cases of when you’ll use them, so you’ll know when speaking or writing to watch out for them.
You Might Be Confusing People (without meaning to!)
When you use participles wrong, you mix up who is feeling the emotion in a situation, which gives your listeners (or readers) the wrong information. The biggest difficulty is that oftentimes both uses can be true, though one may not be flattering to you!
English uses participles for two completely different uses, which is something that has confused many native speakers since 7th grade. However, I’ve taken this confusing subject and broken it down into a couple of lessons that make it clear, and confusing people will be a problem of the past!
